The Practice has a long tradition of exploring the boundaries of our “trade” meaning the boundaries of our art and our science. In the recent past we have held a number of workshops with this objective in mind. These workshops have explored issues of developments in family therapy (following the work of one of the founders of The Practice, Dr A. C. Robin Skynner), looked at the Social and Individual aspects of our being (a festschrift based on the work of one prominent member of the Practice, Dr Dennis Brown) as well as issues around the movements called “ Cults ” and on Race.
The Practice has good international connections; one event was held jointly with members of a Norwegian Institute and another in Sicily with members of the Italian Confederation of Research and Group Analysis (COIRAG). We, naturally, value equally our “local” connections. One event was conducted with the leading participation of a consultant gastroenterologist and a general practitioner, another with a professor from the LSE and another with group analysts who do not work at the Practice.
We value our connection with the Institute of Group Analysis (IGA) and many of our colleagues contribute to its professional life. Most of us hold the post of Training Group Analyst which enables us to have trainees in our twice weekly groups. Some of us work as tutors, supervisors and teachers at the various courses and events of the IGA. Some of us are currently involved in developing a workshop on supervision in conjunction with COIRAG. We hope to learn by comparing and contrasting our different ways of working.
A number of us are established authors. Mrs Cynthia Rogers has just published a book related to the professional life of therapists entitled: Psychotherapy and Counselling: A Professional Business. Our next event The Business of Therapy: The Trials and Tribulations of Life as a Therapist will be related to this book. We hope this will be an opportunity for therapists and other professionals to join us in this examination of the various phases and aspects of our working life.
