For many years Robin Skynner pioneered the development of group analysis and other therapies for families and couples in trouble. We are today able to offer a range of services based on long experience with different kinds of need. All the therapies are psychodynamic, some giving more emphasis to the relationship and some emphasising personal growth. The range includes:
• Conjoint therapy for married and unmarried couples where both part ners attend regularly together and are seen by one or two therapists.
• Separate individual or group therapy for each partner in a troubled relationship.
• Four-way therapy in which each partner has their own therapist or group, and both are then seen together for supplementary sessions by the two therapists. This model combines the advantages of the first two.
• Couples groups in which three or four couples meet on a once-weekly basis with one or two therapists for long-term work that focuses on both the pair and the person. There are three couples groups and a fourth is in preparation.
• Whole family therapy in which the children and either or both parents meet regularly to work together on problems.
Many problems arise first in the context of troubled relations at home. Couples and families in trouble now account for a significant proportion of those seen at the Practice. In all cases couples are seen for a thorough assessment by one or two therapists who involve both parties and sometimes their children. This might be done in a consultation for the couple, a meeting for the whole family, or separate consultations for each member. A recommendation is then drawn up for brief or extended therapy.
The Practice has excellent links with other agencies and individuals to whom referrals can be made for needs outside our range of services. The choice of therapy is indi cated by the nature of the problem and is arrived at in a discussion between patients and therapists, taking into account their financial resources and availability for ses sions. Each of the different methods has different strengths and cost implications, and we welcome preliminary enquiries.
