INFERTILITY

We wish to bring to your attention new forms of psychological help at this Practice for couples undergoing investigation and/or treatment for problems of infertility.
We are two psychotherapists with a committed interest in the subject and long experience helping couples through assisted reproduction.
We have worked together with couples for some ten years. One of us, Jane Haynes , recently edited the first UK text on the psychology of assisted reproduction, Inconceivable Conceptions: psychological perspectives on assisted reproductive technology, (Brunner Routledge, 2003).   The other, John Schlapobersky , was the editor of Dr. Robin Skynner's clinical papers and has developed the use of groups for couples in trouble.

The Group Analytic Practice has long been a centre of excellence in the practice of marital psychotherapy and in the training of staff who work as marital specialists.   The Practice has a distinguished history in psychological and psychosomatic medicine, individual and group psychotherapy and our staff include psychiatrists with a special competence in body-mind related problems.    We use the methods of modern marital psychotherapy to provide a reliable service to couples affected by the range of problems associated with infertility.   We are now extending this service on a systematic basis and invite the referral of couples affected by any of the issues associated with fertility.

Initially we shall be offering Couples Groups, groups set up for three or four couples with similar or related difficulties who will meet together on a regular basis with the two of us.   The first of these groups – focused on the anxieties associated with fertility issues - will be time-limited and will be run for one and half hours each week.   Couples will be selected from the range of those referred who are likely to be able to help each other through the duress of their shared difficulties.   This self-help approach has been proved beneficial in psychological treatment for a wide range of problems.
