Present position :
I was appointed Consultant Psychiatrist at Barnet NHS Mental Health Services at Barnet NHS Mental Health Services in 1990 and seconded to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in 1997 to develop a new service, where I remain to date.
I am visiting Consultant Psychiatrist at the Florence Nightingale Hospital, Central London and Priory Hospital North London and an Associate at the Group Analytic Practice, Central London.
Current Role :
My clinical work includes the assessment and treatment of adult mental illness, mood, anxiety and stress related disorders; relationship problems and personality disorders; organic and alcohol related disorders; psychiatric aspects of physical illness, injury or accidents; somatisation (psychosomatic symptoms); dissociation; factitious disorder (Munchausen's syndrome) and malingering.
Previous Training :
I studied psychology and basic medical sciences at the University of Toronto, Canada and medicine at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London, London. I trained in psychiatry at the Middlesex and University College Hospitals Training Schemes, London and Group Psychotherapy at the Institute of Group Analysis, London.
I have received postgraduate training in solution-focused therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), the adult attachment interview, medical law and ethics, mental health law, evidence based mental health, teaching evidence based mental health and teaching in medicine.
Professional Activities
Medico-legal Work :
I have extensive experience in the assessment of psychiatric disability for employers, the insurance industry and pensions agencies, and undertake medico-legal work, including acting as Expert Witness and providing psychiatric reports to the Courts especially in cases of personal injury and child protection (adult mental health issues).
I have an excellent record of Court appearances, including the High Court, with over 150 cases reported on.
I am a founding member of the Society of Expert Witnesses.
